Bjarne Johnsen was a member of the Norwegian men’s gymnastics team, which won an Olympic gold medal in the all-around free system event. He worked as an office employee and correspondence clerk. He married the Boston-born Anna Margrethe Margrete Mowinckel-Hansen in 1916, by whom he had two sons. After the death of his first wife, he remarried Gudrun Dreyer in 1930, with whom he had one more child.
