The son of a vicar, Clement Elwell was educated at Marlborough School before going up to Worcester College, Oxford where he studied law, and eventually became a barrister.
Elwell played cricket at Marlborough and Oxford, and was also a member of the Devon and Somerset Wanderers at the time of the 1900 Paris Olympics. He never played, however, in the match against the Union des Sociétés Français de Sports Athletiques. He also played for the Devon county side (1891-97) and Shropshire (1895-1901). Elwell’s son was the well-known Waltham racehorse trainer Lionel Elwell.
