Harold Watts

Harold Watts was educated at Newton Abbott School and Keble College, Oxford, where he played both cricket and hockey He was a triple hockey Blue 1902-04 and in 1903 was captain of Keble College cricket XI.

Watts also played hockey for Devon, and Western Counties. He was a member of the Devon and Somerset Wanderers at the time of the 1900 Paris Olympics. He never played, however, in the match against the Union des Sociétés Français de Sports Athletiques. Between 1901-10 Watts made 17 appearances for Devon in the Minor Counties Cricket Championship. His brothers John and Francis also played cricket for Devon, as did their father, also named Francis. Harold Watts was also secretary of the South Devon Cricket Club.

A solicitor by profession, Watts joined the Devon Cyclists Battalion during World War I before transferring to the 2nd Devonshire Regiment, where he soon rose through the ranks to captain. Sadly, he lost his life in the Third Battle of Ypres in 1917, ten says after being wounded.
