Edgar Daniel came from a well-known Taunton family, and both Edgar and his father John were known as all-round sportsmen in the area. They both played cricket for the Taunton club. As Edgar would have been well-known to many of the Devon and Somerset Wanderers at the 1900 Paris Olympics, he probably went along as an “extra man”, although he did not get a chance to play.
By occupation, Daniel was a master legging and bootmaker, largely for military officers. He served in the 2nd Somerset Militia, an auxiliary regiment, at the turn of the 20th century. Daniel’s hobby was singing in the Taunton Choral Society.
