After competing as a gymnast at the 1908 Olympics, Carl Hårleman competed in his best event, the pole vault, at the 1912 Olympics, but failed to get out of the qualifying round. In 1913 Hårleman placed second at the British AAA meet (to teammate Clas Gille). He kept improving during the war years and in 1917 set a Swedish record with 3.883, also winning the Swedish title that year. Hårleman was from a noble family and later worked for an insurance company, served in the Army as a captain, and served as secretary-general of several sports associations.
