After graduating from secondary school, Curt Hartzell attended a commercial school and then went to Germany for language studies. In 1912, he was a member of the Swedish team that won gold in the Swedish system team event at the Stockholm Olympics. He also played football, bandy, and tennis while representing IFK Norrköping. In 1911, he acted as the club’s secretary.
In 1920, he took up a job as a clerk in the Scandinavian Bank. Later, he worked as a correspondent at the Oxelösund Ironworks and from 1935-40 as a clerk in the management of the Deutsche Bank und Disconto-Gesellschaft in Essen in Germany. In 1926, Hartzell married Olga Lovisa Elmgren; they had a daughter and a son.
