Handball goalie Peter Hofmann competed at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, but the East German team finished a disappointing seventh. He played 148 international matches with the GDR national team. In 1986, he won the bronze medal at the World Championships, and in 1990 the East German team finished eighth.
Until re-unification, Hofmann played with SC Leipzig, who were GDR Champions in 1976 and 1979, and cup winners in 1982. He then moved to SG Wallau / Massenheim in 1990, helping them win the German Championship in 1992 and 1993 and the German Cup in 1993 and 1994. The team also won the European IHF Cup in 1992. He later moved to HSG Dutenhofen / Münchholzhausen and HSC Bad Neustadt in lower leagues. A trained electrician and traffic engineer, he later worked as a lifeguard in the swimming bath Neustadt Triamare.
