Dietmar Schmidt, who was not related to his teammate Wieland Schmidt, captained the gold medal winning East German handball team at the 1980 Moskva Olympics, winning the final after a 23-22 overtime victory against the Soviet Union. He played 242 international matches with the GDR national team and scored 349 goals. In 1974, he won a silver medal at the Worlds and in 1978 helped the team win bronze.
Domestically, Schmidt played with ASK Frankfurt on Oder and helped them win GDR Championships in 1974, 1975, 1982, and 1983, adding the 1975 European Cup of Champions. Dietmar Schmidt later turned to coaching (Frankfurter HC) and became CEO of a company producing doors and windows.
