German backcourt handball player Grit Jurack came sixth with the German team at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Twelve years later at Beijing, she was on the German team that finished disappointingly in last place in the preliminary round. She was the top scorer at the 1999 and 2007 World Championships, although Germany did not reach the final. In 1997 and 2007 she came third at the Worlds. Jurack won 306 international caps and scored 1,581 goals.
Jurack was Female Handball Player of the Year in Germany five times in 1999, 2000-01, and 2007-08. Despite having little success with the German national team, she enjoyed more success at club level. Jurack played in Germany with BSV Schönau Leipzig (1989-93) and HC Leipzig (1993-2004), winning the national title in 1998 and 1999, and the German Cup in 1996 and 2000. She then moved to Denmark and played for Ikast-Bording Elite HB (2001-03) and Viborg HK (2004-12), helping Viborg win the European Champions League in 2006, 2009 and 2010. She also won the Danish national title in 2006 and 2008-10, and the Danish Cup from 2006-08 with Viborg. With Ikast Bording she won the EHF Cup in and the Danish Cup both in 2002.
Jurack later became team manager and assistant coach of the German national team from 2015-16. She then went to TSV Glücksburg as a youth coach.
