Romanian-born Edith Matei was a member of the Austrian female handball team participating in the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics. The team finished fifth. After the fall of communism in Romania, she chose to represent Austria. Matei won 178 international caps and scored 398 goals with Romania and 104 international caps and 399 goals with Austria.
Domestically, she played with CS Știința Bacău and SCM Râmnicu Vâlcea in Romania, and with Hypobank Niederösterreich in Austria, helping them win Austrian national titles and European Champions League between 1992-95. With Vâlcea she won the Romanian national title 1989-91 and the IHF Cup in 1984 and 1989. A severe knee injury effectively ended her career at the age of just 31.
