Goalkeeper Michaela Schanze came sixth with the German handball team at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, having won the World Championships in 1993. She won 129 international caps.
Domestically, Schanze played with HC Leipzig (until 2002), SV Union Halle-Neustadt (2002-05), Thüringer HC (2005-09), and Schlotheimer SV. She helped Leipzig win the German national title in 1998-99, and 2002, and also the EHF Cup in 1992. Later, she turned to coaching.
