Biography

Left winger Herwig Ahrendsen belonged to the West German handball team that finished sixth, after losing the match for fifth place 17-16 against the Soviet Union, at the 1972 München Olympics. He won 40 international caps and scored 35 goals. Domestically, he played with THW Kiel.

Ahrendsen later started a political career and became press spokesman from 1983-87 with the Regional Parliament of Schleswig-Holstein. He was then involved in the affair of First Minister Uwe Barschel who was lying during the regional elections of 1987, and was later found dead in a room at the Beau Rivage hotel in Genève in mysterious circumstances.

After the death of Barschel, Ahrendsen became deputy at the Oberfinanzdirektion Kiel. After paying a friend unjustifiable compensation payments from tax revenue, Ahrendsen was suspended from the service in 1997 and, in 2004, was removed from his post after a court appearance saw him put on probation. Ahrendsen then worked as a lawyer.
