Diethard Finkelmann belonged to the West German handball team that finished sixth after losing the match for fifth place 17-16 against the Soviet Union at the 1972 München Olympics. He won 68 international caps and scored 50 goals. Domestically, he played with Reinickendorfer Füchse until 1971, before a move to Hamburger SV for just one season, before a return to Berlin.
In 1966, Finkelmann won the field World Championships and was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany`s highest sports award. By profession, he was a sports teacher. He was also active as a sports administrator with Reinickendorfer Füchse from 1981-86.
