Handball player Matthias Hahn competed at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, but the East German team finished a disappointing seventh. He played 55 international matches with the GDR national team and scored 125 goals. He also played with the re-unified German team, and added 56 more international caps and scored another 116 goals. In 1986, he won the bronze medal at the World Championships and, in 1990, the East German team finished eighth. The re-unified German team placed ninth at the 2000 Europeans, and tenth at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
Domestically, Hahn played with SC Empor Rostock until 1990 and helped them win two national titles, in 1986 and 1987, and five consecutive cup wins 1985-89. After re-unification he moved to SG Hameln (1990-94), and SG Flensburg-Handewitt (1994-2004). With Flensburg he won the European EHF Cup in 1997, the Euro City-Cup in 1999, European Cup Winners’ Cup in 2001, and the national title in 2004. Hahn started a coaching career after his retirement as a player.
