Jan Holpert was a handball goalkeeper who participated in three consecutive Olympic Games from 1992-2000, with a fifth place in 2000 being his best result. With 476 penalty saves during his career from the 7-metre mark, he was known as a “seven-meter killer”. In 1998, Holpert was on the German team winning the bronze medal at the European Championships. In total, he won 245 international caps.
Domestically, Holpert played with TSB Flensburg (until 1986), TSV Milbertshofen (1986-93), and SG Flensburg-Handewitt (1993-2007). He won the German national title in 2004 and the German Cup in 1990 and from 2003-05. He also won the European EHF-Cup in 1997, the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1991 and 2001, and the City-Cup in 1999. During his Bundesliga career he played 625 matches.
Holpert later founded his own communication agency and supported his club Flensburg-Handewitt. His son Magnus and his brother Fynn were also Bundesliga handball professionals. Jan Holpert was involved in goalkeeping coaching at Flensburg-Handewitt until 2021.
