Josef Karrer belonged to the West German handball team that finished sixth after losing the match for fifth place 17-16 against the Soviet Union at the 1972 München Olympics. He won 39 international caps. Domestically, he played with TV Großwallstadt until 1971, and then moved to TSV Lohr. In 1972, he was top scorer of the German Bundesliga.
In 1966, Karrer won the field World Championships and was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany`s highest sports award. Karrer became a trained building fitter, but later worked as a bank clerk. His son Heiko became a professional handball player.
