Klaus Lange belonged to the West German handball team that finished sixth after losing the match for fifth place 17-16 against the Soviet Union at the 1972 München Olympics. He won 54 international caps and scored 133 goals. Domestically, he played with Hamburger SV, VfL Bad Schwartau and finally MTV Herzhorn, where he also started his coaching career.
By profession, Lange was a graduated sports teacher. He later also became a local politician and was elected mayor of his hometown Herzhorn in 1986. He also wrote books about the fortunes of young men who belonged to Hitlerjugend at the end of World War II.
