Handball player Holger Schneider competed at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, but the East German team finished a disappointing seventh. He played with German national teams (former GDR and re-unified Germany) in 98 international matches and scored 197 goals. At the 1990 World Championships, the East German team finished eighth, and the re-unified German team placed tenth at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
Domestically, Schneider played with SC Empor Rostock until 1992 and helped them win one national title (1987) and two cups (1987-88). After re-unification he moved to SG Flensburg-Handewitt (1992-98), helping them to win the European EHF Cup in 1997. In 1988 he moved for his final season to A1 Bregenz in Austria.
In Bregenz, Schneider started his coaching career before moving on to SV Port Schwerin, HSG Wetzlar, Stralsunder HV, HC Empor Rostock, HF Springe, Güstrower HV, and finally to HB Esch in Luxembourg, helping them to win the national title in 2017.
