Backcourt handball player Daniel Stephan played for the German handball team at three consecutive Olympic Games from Atlanta 1996 to Athens 2004, winning the silver medal in his last appearance. He also won a European Championship medal of each colour; gold in 2004, silver in 2002, and bronze in 1998. In total, he won 183 international caps and scored 589 goals. He was the first German to become World Handball Player of the Year (1998), and from 1997-99 was Handball Player of the Year in Germany.
Domestically, Stephan played with OSC Rheinhausen (1982-94) and TBV Lemgo (1994-2008). He helped Lemgo win the German national title 1997 and 2003, the German Cup in 1995, 1997 and 2002, the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1996, and the EHF Cup in 2006. Stephan was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. He later worked with German TV channel Sport1 as a handball expert.
