Center Klaus Westebbe belonged to the West German handball team that finished sixth after losing the match for fifth place 17-16 against the Soviet Union at the 1972 München Olympics. He won 52 international caps and scored 86 goals.
Domestically, Westebbe played with VfL Gummersbach from 1968-82 and helped them to win the West German Championship six times, in 1969, 1973-76 and 1982. The team also won the European Champions Cup in 1970-71 and 1974, and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1978 and 1979. In 1970, he was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany`s highest sports award.
