Biography

István Szabó played for MTK, TFSE, and Spartacus as a player, with the latter winning the Hungarian Cup in 1970 and the Hungarian Championship in 1973. He also played 52 times for the Hungarian national team between 1967 and 1972, with which he participated in the 1970 World Cup in France and the 1972 München Olympics. The Hungarian team finished eighth in both tournaments.

Before his retirement in 1978 Szabó started coaching at Bp. Spartacus women’s team, with which he won the Hungarian championship twice (1983, 1986), four silvers (1979, 1980, 1981, 1984) and two bronzes (1985, 1989), along with the Hungarian Cup in 1988. Szabó was also successful as a coach at the international level, as he won the European Cup Winners Cup with Spartacus in 1981 and a year later reached the finals in this series.

As an assistant to János Csík, Szabó was part of the Hungarian national team’s 1982 World Cup silver medal, and later in 1989 he was appointed national captain. Szabó taught at the Department of Physical Education at Szent István University in Gödöllő from 1992 until 2014, and at the same time he coached the university’s men’s team for a while.
