Biography

László Szabó’s handball career began at FTC (1957 to 1968), where as a goalkeeper for the then second division team he reached the junior national team. After graduating from the Budapest Technical University, he transferred to the first division Tatabánya, where he played for twelve years until 1980 and later became the team’s coach. They wrote sports history with Tatabánya, as in 1969 they won the Hungarian Cup for the first time in the city’s history, then the Hungarian championship titles in 1974, 1978 and 1979.

Between 1968 and 1972, he played 43 times in the national team’s jersey, and was the goalkeeper of the Hungarian national handball team at the 1970 World Championship in France (8th place), and the 1972 Munich Olympics (8th place). In Munich he was a substitute in three matches against the United States, West Germany, and Sweden.

Following his sports career he worked as a renowned engineer in Hungary and Switzerland for decades.
