Biography

Sigurbergur Sigsteinsson was a multi-talented sportsman who competed at an international level for Iceland in both handball and football. Sigsteinsson represented Fram in Reykjavík in both sports, playing in 352 handball games and 225 football matches for the club. He won the Icelandic handball championship with the club on four occasions (1967–68, 1970, 1972) and was a mainstay in the national squad. From 1967 to 1978 he played in 88 international handball matches for Iceland, including representing the team at the 1972 München Olympics. As a footballer Sigsteinsson made his only international appearance for Iceland in August 1971 in a friendly against England. The following year he was part of the team that won the Icelandic championship. After his retirement from active competition he worked as a handball coach for the women’s national team.
