A pivot, Ghiţă Licu played his entire career from 1964-80 with one club – Dinamo Bucuresti. With Dinamo, Licu won the Romanian championships in 1965, 1966 and 1978 and won the Romanian Cup in 1979. Licu was capped 197 times with the Romanian national team between 1966-76 and scored 328 goals. Licu won an Olympic silver in 1976, Olympic bronze in 1972, was World Champion in 1970 and 1974 and won bronze at the 1967 World Championships. After finishing his sporting career, Licu worked as a handball coach. From 1980-93 he was the coach of Dinamo Bucuresti, before moving to Germany in 1995. From 1995-99 Licu was head coach of SC Madgeburg junior team and from 1999-2006 was the assistant coach of SC Madgeburg senior team, winning the German title with them in 2001 and EHF Champions League in 2002, the most important handball club competition in Europe. From January to December 2006, Licu was the head coach of SC Madgeburg. His son Robert also became an international level handball player and later coach.
