Vincent Lafko played basketball in his youth and only took up handball when he was 18-years-old. Lafko played his entire career (1964-76) with Tatran Prešov, except for short spells with Dukla Janovice and ČH Bratislava at the end of 1960s. With Tatran, Lafko won the Czechoslovakian title in 1971 and three Czechoslovakian Cups. Lafko was capped 50 times with the Czechoslovakian national team. He won an Olympic silver in 1972 and was runner-up at the 1971 World Cup.
After finishing his sporting career, Lafko worked as a handball coach. He coached Tatran Prešov to the last Czechoslovakian title in 1993 and later was head coach of the Slovak national handball team. Lafko was also a lecturer at the University of Prešov and was a member of Slovak Olympic Academy.
