Dubrovnik-born Croatian judoka Mariela Spacek became a naturalised Austrian in October 1992. She then qualified for the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics representing her new country. Spacek was eliminated in the repêchage of the pool stage in the middleweight division and placed equal ninth.
Spacek won the bronze medal at the 2001 European Championships. She also won three Austrian national titles in 1995-96, and 2000.
