Biography

Michèle St. Louis was a true pioneer of judo on the islands of Mauritius and won multiple medals at international competitions. At the time of her death St. Louis was the only Mauritian judoka to be crowned a two-time African champion. Her first medal at the African Judo Championships came in 1991 when she won silver in the -72kg. The following year she went one better to win gold in the same category, becoming the first Mauritian judoka to be an African champion. Her second gold at the African Judo Championships came six years later with victory in the -78kg class. Between her successes at the African championships St. Louis competed at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, but was eliminated in the opening round with a loss to Tetiana Beliaieva. She also won three gold medals at the Indian Ocean Island Games (1993, 1998, 2003).
