West German middleweight judoka Michael Bazynski was eliminated in his first bout at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, losing by yuko against upcoming Dutch bronze medalist Ben Spijkers. However, Bazynski’s greatest moment came in 1985 when he won the silver medal at the European Championships. He won three national titles in 1982, 1986, and 1988.
Bazynski later turned to coaching, and became female youth national coach in 2001. He took over the job as senior coach to the national female team in 2009.
