Arthur Beavis

Arthur Beavis went to the 1924 Paris Olympics as the ABA featherweight champion, having beaten T. Gorman of Hull a few months earlier. At Paris, Beavis lost to the eventual bronze medallist Pedro Quartucci of Argentina in their second round contest. Beavis retained his ABA title in 1925 by beating A. Holmes of Lynn BC before stepping up to lightweight in 1926, when he was beaten at the ABA quarter-final stage (second series) by Glasgow’s Harry Dingley.

Beavis turned professional in 1927, and in April that year beat Tom Bayley of Bermondsey at The Ring, Blackfriars on his début. The following month, Beavis fought Harry Kent on the undercard of the Johnny Hill – Alf Barber fight for the vacant British flyweight title at the NSC. Beavis had his last fight as a professional against the experienced Dave Danahar in 1928, and it was his fourth and last win in a 5-fight career. Beavis then became an instructor at the Polytechnic club, having previously been as assistant at the Old Hendon Boxing Club. He also continued to fight exhibition bouts.
