West German extra-lightweight judoka Helmut Dietz finished seventh at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, losing his pool semi-final against the eventual gold medalist Kim Jae-Yeop from South Korea. However, Dietz’s greatest moment came in 1987 when he won the bronze medal at the European Championships. Dietz never won a national title, but entered the podium eight times, winning four silver and four bronze medals.
