Biography

Barry Johnson competed in judo at the 1972 München Olympics and missed the 1976 Montréal Olympics due to an injury. He began his judo training in 1963 at the Sydney Police Citizens Boys Club and later studied at and competed for the YMCA Sydney Judo Club, Sydney University Judo Club, Moss Vale International, and Illawarra International Judo Clubs.

In his competitive career which ended in 1981, Johnson won 13 Australian championships and 18 New South Wales titles. He competed at the World Championships at 1968 Mexico City, 1973 Lausanne, Switzerland, 1977 Barcelona, 1971 Ludwigshafen, 1975 Wien, and 1979 Paris. His best result was in 1975 at Wien when he finished fifth in the 93 kgs division. Sensei Johnson achieved the rank of Yondan (4th dan black belt).
