Tibor Kincses began his athletic career as a wrestler for Kecskeméti SC but was more attracted to the judokas training nearby in their white judogi. Kincses won his first Hungarian championship title in the cadet age group in 1974. In 1976 he earned a bronze medal at the Youth Friendship Tournament in North Korea, and in 1979 he won a gold medal at the same tournament in Ulaanbaatar.
In 1980 he won the Olympic trials, earning a spot to represent Hungary in the 60 kg category at the Moskva Games. At just 20-years-old, he surprised many by finishing third to win bronze. At the 1981 European Championships in Debrecen, he placed fifth, and at the World Championships in Maastricht, he came in seventh. He also won three team titles in the Hungarian Championships.
Kincses ended his sports career relatively early, at the age of 28, and later worked as a coach at his former club in Kecskemét, with a brief stint in Szeged.
