Biography

Wishaw’s Billy Fisher beat England’s Terry Marshall to win the 1960 ABA light-middleweight title and thus secure his place on the Great Britain Olympic team later that year. He went on to win a bronze medal in Roma, after losing his semi-final bout on a decision to Italy’s Carmelo Bossi. Fisher, a steelworker, turned professional as a middleweight in 1961 and had 33 bouts, with a 21-12 record. All but two of his fights were in the United Kingdom, many in his native Scotland. A local hero in Wishaw, Fisher owned the Market Bar in the town for 40 years after his retirement from boxing following defeat by Welshman Carl Thomas in 1967. Fisher’s brother Bobby was also a professional boxer between 1961-70, and in 1962 beat Terry Spinks in the former Olympian’s penultimate fight.
