Biography

Günther Neureuther was one of the most successful West German judokas in the 1970s and 1980s. He won the silver medal in the heavyweight class at the 1976 Montréal Olympics, losing the final against Serhiy Novikov of the Soviet Union. In the open class Neureuther finished seventh. Eight years later at Los Angeles he won a bronze medal as a light-heavyweight.

In 1979, 1983 and 1985 Neureuther also won bronze medals at the Worlds and in 1984 he earned the European title. In 1978 and 1982 he was runner-up at the Europeans, while in 1979, 1984 and 1985 he won bronze medals, and domestically, he won nine national titles. He reached the 8th Dan in 2017. Neureuther also became a long-time sports administrator with his home club TSV München-Großhadern, being named president in 2011. By profession, he was a policeman.
