Biography

Despite losing to Alf Jackson in the 1928 ABA light-heavyweight final, London City policeman Joe Goyder represented Britain in the heavyweight division at the Amsterdam Olympics later that year. He had just one fight, losing to Sam Olij of the host country.

Goyder appeared in three more ABA light-heavyweight finals, first beating H. Milne in 1929 and losing to Jack Petersen in 1931. The following year Goyder beat George Brennan to claim his second title. Goyder’s finest moment, however, came at Hamilton, Ontario, in 1930, when he won the British Empire Games light-heavyweight gold medal by beating the local favourite Al Pitcher on points.
