Half-lightweight judoka Udo Quellmalz represented East Germany at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and was eliminated in his second round bout by the eventual bronze medalist Yosuke Yamamoto. After re-unification, Quellmalz won the bronze medal at the 1992 Barcelona Games and crowned his career with the gold medal at Atlanta in 1996. He won the World Championships in 1991 and 1995, and also won silver in 1989 and bronze in 1993.
Quellmalz also won silver at the 1990 Europeans, and bronze in 1988 and 1993. In 1987 and 1988, he won the East German title, and a further four more German titles after re-unification. Quellmalz was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award in 1993.
Quellmalz turned to coaching after his active career. He was Great Britain’s Chief Coach from 1998, and later moved to Austria and Qatar, before returning to Leipzig to become Regional Coach with the Judo Federation of Saxony.
