Alex Ireland was the 1921 British Amateur Champion. He fought as a professional from 1922-30, winning 33 fights, losing 10, and drawing 3, as a welterweight and middleweight. He made three failed attempts to win the Scottish Area title as a welterweight, all against “Hamilton” Johnny Brown. In 1928 he took the European Middleweight title, by defeating Tommy Milligan in Edinburgh, winning at the same time the Commonwealth and British Middleweight titles. Six months later Ireland defended the Commonwealth and British titles against Welshman Frank Moody. Another half-year later, in May 1929, he was knocked out by Len Harvey from Cornwall, and after losing another title bout for the Scottish Championship against Harvey, Ireland retired from boxing.
