Danny Lee started boxing at the Woodhall Boys Club and when he was 17 won the Scottish Western Division flyweight title. After touring Ghana with the Scotland team in late 1959 he was forced to miss the international against England in 1960 after contracting malaria. The year improved, however, and Lee outpointed James Pattullo of Croydon to capture the ABA flyweight title and then went to the Roma Olympics. There, he reached the flyweight third round before losing to the German Manfred Homberg, the 1957 and 1959 European amateur champion. By the end of the year, Lee had turned professional and between 1961-65 took part of 20 bouts in the paid ranks, winning 12. He lost to two future British champions, Walter McGowan and Alan Rudkin, early in their careers. Lee had beaten his fellow-Scot McGowan on his way to winning the 1960 Scottish ABA flyweight title. After ending his ring career, Lee became a successful coach in his native Scotland.
