Biography

Marko Spittka was a German middleweight judoka who won the bronze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Four years later he was eliminated in the pool stage at the Sydney Games. He started his judo career in the former East Germany, winning the silver medal at the 1989 Youth European Championships and two gold medals at both the 1990 European and Youth World Championships.

After reunification, Spittka won his first national title in 1992. After moving to heavyweight, he won a further four national titles from 1995-98. In 1997, he won a silver medal at the World Championships, and again at the Europeans the following year. Spittka later turned to coaching and became Chief National Coach in Austria from 2013-19. Thereafter, he became Regional Coach at the Olympic Centre in München.
