Biography

Heavyweight judoka Tony Sweeney represented Great Britain at the 1961 European Team Judo Championships in Milano and won a bronze medal. He added three individual bronzes at each of the next three European Championships 1963-65. Sweeney was also a member of the four-man British team when judo made its début at the Tokyo Olympics. He also competed in the 1965 World Championships in Rio de Janeiro. Sweeney was a former economics student at Bristol University where he was captain of the university judo team. He was also the inspiration behind the formation of the British Universities Judo Association and later became a senior coach with the Association.
