East German lightweight judoka Karl-Heinz Werner was eliminated in his first pool at the 1972 München Olympics. He lost the pool semi-final against West German Wolfram Koppen by Yusei-gachi. Werner later became a judo coach. In 1974 and 1977 he won East German titles, and also claimed four bronze medals at the European Championships during his career. Werner reached the 7th Dan.
