When judo was first included in the Olympic program at Tokyo in 1964, Austrian Gerhard Zotter participated in the lightweight division. He reached the quarter-finals and finished fifth eventually. In 1963, he had won a bronze medal at the European Championships, and in 1965 and 1966 added Austrian national titles.
