Terry Nicoll’s sporting career began with horse riding, but eventually evolved into the modern pentathlon. During the course of his training, he was aided by multiple former Olympians and was selected to represent Australia in the sport at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. There, he finished 35th individually and eighth with a team that included Neville Sayers and Sven Coomer, as he competed injured. Although he missed the 1960 edition due to a horse-riding accident, he did compete for his country at the 1962 and 1965 World Championships, retiring from active competition after the latter tournament. By career he served in the police force as an officer and instructor, and also competed at the Masters level.
