Pat Harvey attended the Royal Grammar School, Guildford, where he played rugby. He won the 1957 Army Modern Pentathlon Championship, and the following year competed in his first World Modern Championships, held in England.
A pistol shooting specialist, Harvey finished runner-up to Don Cobley in the 1959 Inter-Services Championship and also took part in that year´s worlds at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, but was disqualified for failing to pass through a control gate during the riding discipline. At the 1960 inter-services, Harvey won the pistol shooting event and went to that year´s Roma Olympics as part of the three-man British team which included Cobley and Peter Little. Harvey was the highest placed of the three men in the individual competition, in 11th place.
