Archibald Jack was educated at Rugby School and later Pembroke College at Cambridge. In World War II he was with the Royal Engineers and was honored with the Military Cross for his service in Serbia in 1943. He also served in the Northwest Frontier and in Northern Africa and as the commandant of a mountain warfare training school in Lebanon. He had staff duties in Italy and Norway in 1944-45 and left the Army as a Major.
