At the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, modern pentathlete Helmuth Kahl broke the domination held by Sweden since it was first held at the 1912 Games. Sweden had won every medal since 1912 but Kahl ended that in 1928 when he won the bronze medal. Kahl was a professional soldier and eventually a Senior Lieutenant in the Wehrmacht. In 1957 he tried to run for the German Bundestag, but did not succeed.
