Modern pentathlete Dirk Knappheide was on the West German Olympic team at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and finished 15th with the team and 60th individually. Four years later at Barcelona he represented re-unified Germany and finished 11th with the team and 15th individually. In 1993, he won his only German national title.
Knappheide later turned to triathlon and won several competitions in senior classes. He also founded a fitness and physiotherapist center in his hometown of Warendorf.
