Nottingham-born boxer Mick Varley boxed out of the Clifton ABC in the 1950s and 60s and had over 170 bouts. He was the 1964 ABA welterweight champion after beating London´s Alan Brooks, and that triumph saw him selected as the Great Britain captain for the Tokyo Olympics. Varley was the only Briton to reach the quarter-finals but was stopped in the second round after being floored twice by the Italian Silvano Bertini.
A month after the Olympics, Varley announced his retirement from the ring as he turned to coaching youngsters, mostly at Nottingham’s Ruddington ABC. His own grandson Sam became a boxer, and was a Nottingham champion in 2016.
