Light welterweight boxer Ulrich Beyer lost his first round bout at the 1972 München Olympics against Ray Seales from the USA by a very close 3-2 decision. He then came back in 1976 to Montréal, where he reached the quarter-finals before losing to upcoming Olympic Champion and later professional World Champion Sugar Ray Leonard, also from the USA. From 1971-77 Beyer won seven East German amateur titles in a row. He also won several international tournaments like the Chemie-Cup in Halle in 1970, 1972, 1974, and 1976.
Beyer also won gold medals at the 1971 Europeans, and the 1972-73 Army Championships of the Warszaw Pact Countries. In 1974 he claimed a bronze medal at the Havana Worlds, and in 1975 at the Katowice Europeans. In 1977, he won his last international medal with a silver medal at the Halle Europeans. He then became a boxing coach together with Manfred Wolke and coached among others Henry Maske. He died fairly young, at only 41-years-old.
