René Breitbarth was an East German bantamweight boxer who finished ninth at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. He won three medals at international competitions, winning the light-flyweight gold at the 1985 European Championships and bantamweight bronze in 1987. He also won a bantamweight silver medal at the 1986 Worlds. Breitbarth won national titles in 1986 and 1987.
After German re-unification Breitbarth moved to Leverkusen with famous coach Fritz Sdunek. In 1990, he was the national champion runner-up, but retired after that season. He then worked as the Bundesliga coach of TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen, and they won the national team title in 2001.
